Quick Take: Southwest Can’t Stop Lying Through Its Teeth

Southwest has been in the news lately for a series of unfortunate events that they have been through, and they are going through a self-inflicted PR nightmare because they seem to have an issue with being honest with people.

Story 1: 1000+ Flights Cancelled, it was bad weather guys!

First, there was the recent sick out/vacation out or whatever you want to call it [1, 2]. The point is that Southwest’s official reasoning as to why they had approximately 1800 flights delayed or cancelled was because of weather issues [3]. However, this is completely fabricated based on a couple of points of evidence.

The FAA’s Flight Delay information – Air Traffic Control System Command Center

Screencaps from the Internet Archive’s Wayback machine show that on neither October 10th, or October 11th were delays noted in Texas or Florida. See the images below:

 The National Weather Service Data

The National Weather Service provides hourly data that is able to be stored for up to 2 days prior to the current day of inquiry. To show some correlation to the data from the FAA, I have the hourly data from Dallas Lovefield Airport [4, 5], and from Jacksonville International Airport [6, 7].  They were chosen because Dallas Lovefield is a main hub for Southwest Airlines, and there was local news from Jacksonville that reported weather issues as well [8]. What you will see is that in both cases, there was no evidence of severe weather in either area.

To end the first story. Southwest is lying, and official federal sources show that there was no evidence of weather-related delays documented for October 10th, or October 11 in Texas and Florida as was reported.

Story 2: We’re mandating because we’re federal contractors guys!

Today, I was reading financial news and saw that after the potential sick-out or walk-out, Southwest announced that they were doubling down on their vaccine mandate policy, and requiring their employees to get vaccinated by December 8th, 2021 which is the deadline for federal contractors. According to Seeking Alpha, the company claims that as a federal contractor, they must comply with this rule. Which, that may be a decent explanation if it wasn’t for the fact that they currently are not federal contractors.

There is a database that the government uses to track what companies accept which contracts from the federal government, and it’s open to the public due to transparency reasons. This means we’re able to search whether or not Southwest has ever received a government contract. I searched for “Southwest Airline” on the website known as the Federal Procurement Data System [10, 11, 12]. You can see in the screenshot below that Southwest’s most recent contract was in 2013 and that they received their first contract in 2004, all of which have been for the Department of Veterans Affairs under three different contract names (Southwest Airlines Company, Southwest Airlines Co, and Southwest Airlines Co.).

In short, they’re not contractors and are under no obligation to abide by the December 8th, 2021 deadline.

Lastly, Southwest Airlines management is full of clowns, and you should sell their stock for any profit you have made and immediately use them to buy puts/shorts against Southwest (Ticker: LUV) and make money off of dumb corporate decisions.

Revival

Introduction It's been about two years since my last post. As expected in life, many things have changed over the course of two years. These changes first brought me to abandon the blog in the first place, but just like in all cycles, the blog will come back because the changes in life find its way back here. What's changed? The biggest changes in life since the last blog is that I became highly involved in nonprofit work, and have developed quickly as a leader in my local nonprofit community. I started my own nonprofit and sat on the board of a second at the same time throughout the past 2 years. This all happened while I'm still working my day job as a researcher. While that presents a full schedule, there was still enough time to engage in online antics during the moments when I was walking from A->B, on an elevator, or the occasional downtime periods. In those gaps, I was in charge of a couple of online Discord communities.  How did this affect blogging? Firstly, it ...

Mandates and the Madness of Middle Managers

Premise It’s been almost two years since COVID19 pandemic containment and quarantine protocols began in the United States. Since the protocols such as masking and travel restrictions began, I’ve had the luxury of traveling and living between two areas of the country that have had completely different attitudes levels of strictness from the very beginning. The first is a suburb of a large metropolitan area on the east coast (Metroburb), and the second is a medium sized town approximately 60 miles away from the metropolitan suburb (Medtown). As I’ve been about my business in both of these two areas without a mask for a very long time, only in Metroburb have I been actively harassed for not having a mask. To recount my experiences in Metroburb over the past 6 months: 2 x kicked out of a store for not having a mask 2 x followed by employees urging me to put a mask on 2 x cashiers refusing to accept my payments without a mask 1 x employees debate me on mask wearing 1 x people taking p...

Discord’s New Policies Means They Caved to Nonsense

Introduction I was about to begin my drive back home and before I did I thought that I would go ahead and open Discord to check on any messages or pings that I missed while I was volunteering today. On my opening of the app, I was prompted with a pop-up screen that announced that Discord is changing its policies. At first I thought it was likely just their privacy policy since those seem to change on a dime these days due to constantly shifting trends, regulations, and laws regarding privacy [1] . However, I headed over to the discord blog and I was surprised to see that they were doing more than just their privacy policy. I set out to figure out why exactly they went along with these changes. Summary of Changes The changes of the policies according to the official blog are as follows [2] : In the community guidelines section of their terms, they no longer allow the sharing of: Anti-vaccine content Medically unsupported and dangerous cures for disease Content that disto...
